In England, restored the face of a man who lived 4,500 years ago

Once again, specialists were able to restore the face of a man who walked the earth many thousands of years before us. This time, “plastic surgery” was performed on a man who lived in England about 4,500 years ago. Scientists are sure that a natural “living” face will allow modern people to feel a stronger connection with their ancestors.

The remains of a man were found in the 1930s and 1980s in England in one of the mounds located in Derbyshire. A stone pendant was found on his neck, which, most likely, had a ritual significance. Anthropological analysis showed that the person’s height was about 1.7 meters, and at the time of death, the cause of which could not be established, he was about 25-30 years old. Scientists also managed to find out that the man survived an unsuccessfully healed fracture in his left elbow.

The skull of a man was not completely preserved, and for a long time it was believed that he would remain an indefinite group of bones. Fortunately, technology does not stand still, and 30 years after the last find there was an opportunity to see what a resident of England looked like 4,500 years ago.

Catch the Invisible

The Buxton Museum, where the remains are stored, ordered a team of forensic experts from John Moors University of Liverpool (Face Lab) to reconstruct the face of the man before the exhibition, which will be held in September 2017. Face Lab has extensive experience in such matters: using various technologies, including a 3D scanner, forensic experts restore the faces of people who died many centuries ago, as well as those who died recently and are the subject of police investigations.

The team processed each facial bone using a scanner, placing digital copies of the remaining bones on a computer screen, like a puzzle. The appearance of those areas from which there were no bones, the experts had to "figure out by eye": in the reconstructed image they are blurred.

By the way, now the Face Lab team is working on the reconstruction of the face of an Egyptian female mummy called Ta-Kesh, which is 2700 years old. It is located in the Maidstone Museum, England.
